LEE NEWTON

Lee Newton is a Nashville recording artist and singer-songwriter who rose from humble beginnings in a small town in western North Carolina. Music was her refuge through hard times: she began singing in church with her mother at five, and by seven her cab-driver father had put a guitar in her hands, teaching her to play as they sang on the road. “My Daddy, who named me Brenda Lee after the amazing country singer, always told me, ‘One day, you’ll be playing at the Grand Ole Opry.’ From that moment, I knew music was my calling.”

Rooted in classic country — Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette — Lee’s sound also carries bluesy grit and southern-rock edge influenced by Susan Tedeschi and Lynyrd Skynyrd. By age 20 she had joined bands, taught herself drums, and even traveled to New York City to sing backup for Artimus Pyle, Leslie Hawkins, and JoJo Billingsley, original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Rising career and awards

Lee’s solo career is marked by steady milestones. In 2020 she was named Vocalist of the Year at the Josie Music Awards. Her self-penned EP Undamaged earned EP/Album of the Year at the JMAs in 2021 and placed in the Top 20 Best of 2021 Women of Country. Her 2022 full-length album UNLEESHED — nine tracks written by Lee — features collaborations with Leona Williams, Pam Tillis, Lee Roy Parnell, Mike Rogers, and Tim Watson. UNLEESHED won Album of the Year at the JMAs in 2024 at the Grand Ole Opry House; its single “Working Girl Blues” (feat. Williams, Tillis & Parnell) hit #1 on the NDExpress Independent Single Charts, and the album reached #1 on the NDExpress Independent Album Charts.

In 2023 Lee released her first gospel project, Crossroads, with duets featuring Joe Bonsall (The Oak Ridge Boys), T. Graham Brown, Rhonda Vincent, and others. That year she was honored as JMA Artist of the Year – Traditional Country and closed the Grand Ole Opry show with her original song “Carolina.” In 2024 she released Homesick, featuring singles “Carolina Rain,” “Homesick,” and “Meant to Be,” with “Meant to Be” winning Song of the Year at the ISSA Awards in Atlanta.

Media and recognition

Lee has appeared on WSM’s Coffee, Country & Cody, NBC’s Today in Nashville, Eric Dahl’s Rock & Review, and been featured in Cross Country Magazine, The Cover Magazine, CashBox Magazine (80th Anniversary Edition), Lazie Indie Magazine (cover & 16-page feature), and Retro Lovely Magazine (’50s Edition cover). In 2023 she earned an endorsement from Breedlove Guitars.

Lee Newton blends traditional country heart with soulful blues and southern-rock energy — a voice forged by family, faith, and the open road, now heard on stages from independent charts to the Grand Ole Opry.
