"Whiskey in a teacup”: soft on the surface, unmistakably strong underneath

 

Celeste Marie Wilson was born in Humble on the Texas Gulf Coast and raised in Kingwood, a manicured Houston suburb where the golf course practically started in her backyard. In high school, her family moved to Montgomery, trading suburbia for a town with deep Texas roots—fitting for a family whose land history stretches back to statehood, including ranches tied to a grant signed by Governor James Stephen Hogg.

That legacy came with horses. Celeste Marie was in the saddle four days a week (often daily) almost as soon as she could walk—learning early how to fall, get back up, and keep going. Off the horse, she kept the same rhythm with journals and watercolor, drawn to art stores and museums like they were rooms full of possibility. Long before guitar, she was already a storyteller.

At Sam Houston State University she majored in English, made the Dean’s List, and rode on athletic scholarship (hunter-jumper and dressage), while studying watercolor at the Glassell School of Art. A YA novel deal sparked and fizzled in industry upheaval, but the through-line held: she started setting short stories to music, left school to chase it, and has been writing songs like stories ever since.

Creativity runs three generations deep - her great-grandmother Jessie Marie McCullough was a poet and piano teacher who dreamed of the Grand Ole Opry; both her parents play piano; Celeste Marie won her first regional award at eight and grew up on a grand piano. Years of church choir and musical theater shaped her stage instincts, and her voice - rooted in Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Bonnie Raitt - feels, as she puts it, like “whiskey in a teacup”: soft on the surface, unmistakably strong underneath.

Produced by Jim Reilley, she records on her own Little Dipper Record Company, distributed through Select-O-Hits, rooted in the Sun Records lineage. Her accolades include a Josie Music Award (accepted at the Grand Ole Opry), a 2026 International Songwriting Competition semi-final placement, a MusicRow CountryBreakout chart entry for “Jesus, Tequila & Whiskey,” and a June 2026 win in the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame songwriting competition, where she was named a WSHOF Ambassador and performed in Washington, D.C.

Her debut album, Southern American Princess, is slated for August 2026. Its heart is “Marie,” a love story that mirrors her own family legend—three generations after her great-grandparents eloped against her family’s wishes and made it last a lifetime.
